Purity, Fidelity, Resolve
MOSAIC, Fall 2010

Very Rev. Msgr. Jeffrey M. Monforton
Very Rev. Msgr. Jeffrey M. Monforton

"My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord.".

These words from Mary (Luke 1:46) illustrate who Mary is in the economy of salvation and how you and I are called to imitate her purity. Mary's virginity is a bright light shining for all nations to see.

In his 2002 apostolic letter, The Rosary of the Virgin Mary (Rosarium Virginis Mariae), Pope John Paul II instructed that "in a unique way the face of the Son belongs to Mary. It was in her womb that Christ was formed, receiving from her a human resemblance which points to an even greater spiritual closeness. No one has ever devoted himself to the contemplationof Christ as faithfully as Mary" (no. 10). Namely, Mary's very being, her virginity and her fidelity point directly to Jesus Christ himself. Mary's virginity is a model for the pilgrim Church as together we celebrate our Lord's presence and seek his consolation in a world that can embrace confused and inconsistent priorities. In a culture where the human body can be devalued, the Virgin Mary's virginity shines forth as a promise of God's goodness. The Virgin Mary made a choice to follow Christ unreservedly.

At Sacred Heart, we embrace the mandate of Christ to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ to all nations whether in the city of Detroit or in nations throughout the world. As we celebrate this autumn season rich in color and promise of our Lord's love, please know of our gratitude at Sacred Heart for your kind and generous support.

With prayerful best wishes to you and your loved ones, I am,

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Very Rev. Msgr. Jeffrey M. Monforton
