Year Two Implementation of Together In Faith Plan
North Macomb Vicariate

Updated Fall 2008

The North Macomb Vicariate's Together In Faith (TIF) Plan approved by Cardinal Maida included several goals, objectives or strategies to be met by certain deadlines. Below is the Progress Reported by the Vicariate Pastoral Council in each area, the Tracking Committee's Response, and Implementation Updates.

1. The vicariate parishes will continue to work collaboratively to address the growing need for evangelization and religious formation.

2006 Progress Reported: The Religious Education staff members from the North Macomb and Central Macomb Vicariates collaborate in the areas of religious formation and evangelization. Among others, the collaborative efforts include: providing Catechist formation classes, mini-retreats for Catechists, shared formation for special education students and financial support of Catechist formation for inner-city parishes.

2007 Tracking Committee Response: The Tracking Committee commends the collaborative work done within and between the vicariates, and encourages their continued collaboration.

2008 Year Two Implementation Update: Efforts continue in partnership with the Central Macomb Vicariate to initiate programs for Christian formation. In particular the new Vicariate Life Commission and its evangelization subcommittee has developed plans for outreach. Please provide an update on this planning.

2. December 2006 submit a detailed plan for all parishes to participate in young adult formation.

2006 Progress Reported: In collaboration with the Central Macomb Vicariate, the North Macomb Vicariate is initiating Young Adult Ministry along the lines of the Archdiocesan "corridor" model. The ministry is entitled "Cross Over" Young Adult Ministry. The outline and budget for the first three years are attached. The plan was presented by Krista Bajoka and Jay Colla at the October 24, 2006 Vicariate Pastoral Council meeting and accepted. The pastors of the vicariate have agreed to the budget proposal.

2007 Tracking Committee Response: The Tracking Committee commends the North Macomb Vicariate for its leadership in formulating and supporting the "Cross Over" young adult ministry program. It is the committee's understanding that the program incorporates the AOD' s Corridor Model and that Krista Bajoka will provide the committee with information on the scope and content of the plan. The committee also notes that it is important that all parishes in the vicariate support and take part in this ministry. As such the committee requests an update with regard to the implementation of the program and the involvement of the parishes.

2008 Year Two Implementation Update: The efforts to implement "Cross Over" programs for Young Adult Ministry continue with the hiring of a Young Adult Ministry Coordinator to be shared by the North Macomb and Central Macomb Vicariates. Please provide an update on this planning.

3. The vicariate is encouraged to develop new roles for pastoral leadership in compliance with Canon Law.

2006 Progress Reported: The vicariate sponsored an informational meeting and dinner on October 24, 2006 for those who may have an interest in professional parish ministry. The vicariate is also investigating various options for offering classes in this area of the Archdiocese to provide formation for lay ecclesial ministers. Jim Kiefer from the Office for Pastoral Ministries has been instrumental in guiding us in this process. Provisions are also being made for formation offerings in Spanish and Latinos were invited to the informational meeting and dinner. The Religious Education committee is also providing "mentoring" for new DREs as requested. Parishes are encouraged to provide financial support to those who are actively taking classes toward certification in pastoral ministry, formation and youth and young adult ministries.

2007 Tracking Committee Response: The Tracking Committee commends the vicariate's efforts to initiate a program for the formation of lay ecclesial ministers in conjunction with the BBT vicariate. The committee recognizes the valuable partnerships that have been formed to deliver the needed course work but encourages the continued effort to engage Sacred Heart Major Seminary in the formation and delivery of these programs. As the student cohort comes together, it is strongly suggested that all parishes in the vicariate participate in providing financial support for those taking classed for certification in pastoral ministry. Recognizing that the formation program is scheduled to start with the fall 2007 term, the committee requests an update on the progress being made.

2008 Year Two Implementation Update: The vicariate has developed a plan for "Professional Lay Ecclesial Ministry" and has made a financial commitment to support the program and people seeking formation opportunities. Because of this, two individuals have received certification and the Lay Ministry Subcommittee is actively seeking additional candidates.

4. The vicariate is encouraged to continue partnering, supporting and expanding Hispanic Ministry.

2006 Progress Reported: With the support of Catherine Wagner of the Department of Parish Life and Services, the North Macomb Vicariate has three Latino ministers, including two religious sisters, Sister Barbara Zimmer and Sister Valerie Knoche (IHMs). This has resulted in a great improvement of the outreach to the Latino community. The vicariate continues to provide substantial support to this endeavor.

2007 Tracking Committee Response: The Tracking Committee commends the vicariate for the very tangible progress that has been made in the outreach to the Hispanic community in the vicariate. The committee also recognizes the ever growing need in this ministry and requests that the vicariate and its parishes make the Hispanic Pastoral Plan an ongoing part of their plans. As such, the committee requests the VPC to assess the vicariate's needs in the context of the Hispanic Pastoral Plan and identify the programs and resources required to meet them. Please provide the committee an update as progress continues.

2008 Year Two Implementation Update: Very tangible progress has been made in making the Hispanic Plan a part of parish life in the Vicariate, although St. Lawrence needs to become a more active participant in the Hispanic ministry of the Vicariate.

5. The vicariate is encouraged to work with Central Service staff regarding the location of St. Maximilian Kolbe and St. Francis of Assisi parishes, and the possibility of building a new church at a future site.

2006 Progress Reported: The vicariate priests and Vicariate Pastoral Council agreed to the concept of forming a new parish co-extensive with the current boundaries of St. Francis of Assisi and St. Maximilian Kolbe Parishes. The Cardinal and Consultors approved the concept which would involve purchasing a new site on 26 Mile Road between North Avenue and Gratiot. The two current sites could eventually be sold after a new church is established.

2007 Tracking Committee Response: The Tracking Committee commends the vicariate on the progress made to date in forming a new parish within the boundaries of the current St. Francis of Assisi and St. Maximilian Kolbe parishes. Please keep the committee informed as to future plans and progress.

2008 Year Two Implementation Update: The new pastor of the newly merged St. Francis of Assisi - St. Maximilian Kolbe is working with its leadership and the Archdiocese of Detroit to identify a new location for the parish to better serve the parishioners of the two previous parishes.

General Update:

2006: No substantial changes have been made. We are making progress in each instance. We have a dedicated Vicariate Pastoral Council and have been provided superb support by both Jim Kiefer and Catherine Wagner of the Department of Parish Life and Services. I cannot stress too strongly the essential contribution they have made and continue to provide.

2008: Since 2007, has your vicariate made any significant changes, amendments or additions to your TIF Plan? Please describe, including rationale for change, timeline and projected outcomes. Attach any detailed reports.
