Haiti quake assistance nears $1.5m; help sought for Chile victims

by Robert Delaney of The Michigan Catholic
Published March 12, 2010

DETROIT – As people begin to respond to the call for donations to aid victims of the Feb. 27 earthquake in Chile, contributions to Haiti earthquake relief efforts collected and sent to Catholic Relief Services by the Archdiocese of Detroit neared $1.5 million as of March 2. Donations may be made online.

The $1,489,315 total came from donations received by mail, via the Internet, from parish collections, and various fundraising efforts at Catholic parishes and schools.

CRS, which was already present in Haiti prior to the Jan. 12 earthquake, has played a strong role on the ground since its immediate aftermath to assist relief and reconstruction efforts.

"It has been a great blessing for me to witness the tremendous outpouring of support from so many people from across the Archdiocese for the critical work of Catholic Relief Services in aiding the people of Haiti," said Archbishop Allen Vigneron, Archbishop of Detroit.

"I praise God for their generosity, and I am deeply grateful for their demonstration of charity, even as we all remain aware that the people of Haiti continue to need our prayers and material support," the archbishop added.

As donations and fundraisers continue to be received for Haiti relief, the archdiocese also is encouraging support for CRS in its partnership with Caritas Chile for victims of the late February quake.

As fund raising efforts continue, two events are scheduled for later this month:
